Topic 5. Reconstructing the CNN interview (2 hours)
Congratulations for studying this far! This is the last lesson of your on-line study.
Do you know the
expression devil’s advocate? It means to talk about what you do not think. So for instance, if you think something is nice, you say something
is not nice. Why would you do that? So, discussions will become
active. If you listen to CNN Reporter Reza Sayah, he is playing a devil’s advocate. It may be arranged, because Yousufzai is not
surprised but smiles and answers him.
Let us not play a devil’s advocate. Let us not act like you are a father talking to his
daughter, either. Let us imagine that you are not talking to a very young woman but talking to an intelligent person.
Here are six
questions. Please think you are Yousufzai and answer the questions, and write
them down.
1. Do you know it is not safe to raise your
voice?
2. What would you say if someone said you were too young?
3. What would you say to your classmates, if they were afraid?
4. If you were the president, what would you do with the Taliban?
5. The Taliban has guns and bombs. What would you say to them?
6. What would you do if they want to shut down your school?
