Listening lesson 1

Welcome speech

Welcome to Nicky Sekino’s listening course. My name is Nicky Sekino, a long-time teacher of English. Nicky? Who am I? I am a Japanese man. If you did not know, Nicky is also a name for women. Sometimes it is spelled Nikki. Someone gave it to me when I lived in the United States.

Let me talk about this course. It has two purposes: (1) to watch video clips and (2) to talk about world topics in English. The course level is intermediate or higher. In terms of TOEIC scores, people with TOEIC scores from 600s and higher may enjoy the course.

Here are more details. The course has two parts: on-line study that you do at home and in-class study that you do with your classmates. The on-line study is good for listening and writing skills. The in-class study is good for conversation practice. The on-line part finishes in ten hours, and the in-class study finishes in four hours. In total, the course finishes in 14 hours.

When you come to the class, please speak in English. If you wish to speak in Japanese, or ask questions in Japanese, please make a request first. You can say, “May I talk to you in Japanese?” or, “May I ask  a question in Japanese?” I will say “yes.”

Our first topic is Malala Yousufzai. Do you know who she is? She is a school student in Pakistan who was shot by people with guns. She was taken to a hospital and survived.
